City of San Diego’s Earned Sick Leave and Minimum Wage Ordinance

City of San Diego’s Earned Sick Leave and Minimum Wage Ordinance

This is for informational purposes and intended for businesses that have employees who work within the geographic boundaries of the City of San Diego. Please review the information below to ensure that you are in compliance with the City of San Diego Earned Sick Leave and Minimum Wage Ordinance.

The City of San Diego’s Earned Sick Leave and Minimum Wage Ordinance, San Diego Municipal Code Chapter 3, Article 9, Division 1, became effective on July 11, 2016. It is applicable to employees who perform at least two (2) hours of work within the geographic boundaries of San Diego.

The requirements of the Ordinance, including notices for posting and a template for use by employers to satisfy the employee notice requirement, can be found on the City of San Diego’s Minimum Wage Program’s webpage

In general, the Ordinance requires the following:

• Effective July 11, 2016 through December 31, 2016; all employers must pay each employee not less than $10.50 per hour for each hour worked within the geographical boundaries of the City.  This amount increased to $11.50 per hour on January 1, 2017.  Beginning January 2019, the amount will increase based on the Consumer Price Index.
• Employers must provide each employee earned sick leave, either through an accrual method (1 hour of earned sick leave accrued for every 30 hours worked) or through awarding no less than 40 hours of earned sick leave at the beginning of each benefit year.
• Employers must carryover accrued unused sick leave to the next benefit year, but may cap total accrual of leave at 80 hours.
• Employers may limit use of sick leave to 40 hours in a benefit year.
• Employers must post in a conspicuous place, notices informing employees of their rights under the Ordinance.
• Employers must provide each employee written notice of the employer’s legal and any fictitious business name, address, telephone number, employer’s requirements under the Ordinance and how the employer satisfies these requirements.
• Employers must keep records of wages paid and accrual and use of earned sick leave for a period of no less than three years.
• On a regular basis employers must provide employees with records detailing wages paid and sick leave earned and used.
• Employers must allow employees to use earned sick leave for reasons outlined in the Ordinance including for their own medical care or for the medical care of a family member.

SDG&E Spurs Energy Storage Innovation with Flow Battery Technology

Ocean Beach News Article: SDG&E Spurs Energy Storage Innovation with Flow Battery Technology

From SDG&E: SDG&E recently unveiled a new vanadium redox flow (VRF) battery storage pilot project in coordination with Sumitomo Electric (SEI), which stemmed from a partnership between Japan’s New Energy and Industrial Development Organization (NEDO) and the California Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development (GO-Biz). During the four-year demonstration project, SDG&E will be researching if flow battery technology can economically enhance the delivery of reliable energy to customers, integrate growing amounts of renewable energy and increase the flexibility in the way the company manages the power grid. Is your facility prepared for an influx of electric vehicles?

Ocean Beach News Article: Is your facility prepared for an influx of electric vehicles?

From SDG&E: The San Diego region is about 10 percent of the state. If Governor Brown’s goal of 1.5 million zero-emission vehicles on California roads by 2025 is reached, our region could see 150,000 electric vehicles on our streets. We already have over 23,000 EVs in San Diego. It’s not a question of “if” you will be asked to install charging, it’s a question of “when”?
SDG&E’s Power Your Drive program is installing 3,500 electric vehicle charging stations at apartments, condos and businesses across our service area. Interest in the program has been strong with over 400 properties on the interest list and only 350 sites available as of now. Sign up on our interest list or learn more on sdge.com/PowerYourDrive.

Already have an EV? Sign up for the Electric Vehicle Climate Credit
If you drive an all-electric or plug-in hybrid vehicle, you may be eligible to receive an annual credit of at least $50 on your SDG&E bill. Applications, found online at sdge.com/evcc, are being accepted now through May 2017.
