October is National Cyber Security Month

From Aliro Marketing, who is advising business owners to take this action on FB & IG.

October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month, so you'll want to save this post as I provide instructions for how to turn on 2 factor authentication for your Facebook & Instagram accounts to add a layer of security to your accounts. Why do you need to do this?

Well, it seems like a new round of hackers are up to no good again - In the past 2 weeks, I've seen several personal Facebook connections say they "have not created a new account, don't accept a friend request from me".

And one of my clients recently got maliciously hacked, too. The hacker removed me as admin from her account so I could no longer post for her; the hacker demoted her to "employee" status so she could not make any changes to her own FB page (including reinstating me as admin); the hacker created a fake business manager account to take ownership of her FB business page; and the hacker ran up $750 in fake ads on her credit card.

It’s important to turn on 2 Factor Authentication because it puts an added layer of security on your accounts to prevent hackers from taking over your accounts.

That's why I wrote out step-by-step instructions - with screenshots so you know where to click - for Facebook & Instagram on how to turn on 2 factor authentication for your accounts. I want you to be protected!

If you have any questions, please reach out. And please send this to anyone you know so they can be protected too.

Support for the Alzheimer's Association

The Longest Day Alzheimer's Association

Hello! My name is Dan Dennison living in Ocean Beach. I have volunteered to assist the Alzheimer's Association fundraising event on June 21 — The Longest Day of the year.

Almost, if not all of us, have seen the devastating impact of Alzheimer's on Families and Friends as well as all those caring for and supporting victims of this vicious disease.

My objective is simple to ask local restaurants in Ocean Beach to participate in this one-day event through a contribution of your choice to be sent to the Foundation.

To make it simple, your choice can be either a % of your sales for the day, or a specific amount for each customer check. Any choice you make will be most appreciated. There are no “middle Men” in this process and I will give you the address to mail your check directly to the Association.

If you are able to participate you will be included in Social Media from the Alzheimer's Association and I will definitely announce it through the media where I participate.

I very much appreciate your consideration for this most important health care organization that so actively works on research as well as support programs for both those affected and their caregivers. Please feel free to contact me with any questions as well as confirmation of your participation.

Very Warm Regards and appreciation in advance!

10 TIPS TO SAVE ON ENERGY COSTS AT YOUR BUSINESS

Did you know that by implementing a few tips your business can save on its energy use and costs? From regulating your building’s temperature to cleaning air filters regularly, there are smart ways to lower your energy bills. Here are ten tips that can help reduce your costs without having to sacrifice the comfort of your staff or customers:

  1. Lower the temperature. Your business can keep comfortable without cranking up the heat. Adjust your thermostat by a few degrees to help reduce your energy bill. Don’t completely turn off your heat overnight though – you’ll use more energy to heat up the building again in the morning.
  2. One of the easiest ways to save money is by controlling your thermostat. Smart thermostats can be adjusted remotely to run energy-efficient schedules. If you join SDG&E’s Smart Thermostat program, you’ll receive $50 per registered thermostat with a max of four thermostats for business and two for your home. Get details on sdge.com/MyBusiness.
  3. Did you know ceiling fans help in the colder months too? Change the rotation of your fan blades to clockwise, which will pull warm air down and spread it throughout the room.
  4. Open blinds and sunshades to allow sunlight to heat up the room, especially on south- or west-facing windows. Natural light can warm the space and reduce the need for lighting. When you need to turn on lights, save energy by using energy-efficient LED bulbs.
  5. In work areas that get little use, like storage and conference rooms, install sensors so lights will automatically go off when employees are working elsewhere.
  6. Make sure cold air isn’t drifting into your building by checking weather stripping on your doors and caulking on your windows and other areas that outside air can seep inside. This is especially important in older buildings. You can also put clear, inexpensive plastic sheeting on your windows to add more insulation and reduce cold drafts.
  7. Get a tune-up on your heater to ensure your system is operating efficiently. New, clean air filters can improve airflow and heating.
  8. Make sure your heating air intake and outlet grilles are not blocked by furniture or other bulky items. Obstructed grilles put more of a burden on the system’s fans to move heated air through an office. Also, check your ductwork for air leaks or any damage to insulation.
  9. Check your HVAC filters monthly and clean or replace when dirty. Keeping your HVAC system properly maintained can help save on heating costs.
  10. Check if a door provides good insulation by placing your hand against it from the inside. If it feels cooler than the inside walls, it might be time to install a door that's better insulated.

Employee Retention Tax Credit Information & Update

"Are you aware of the recent tax law changes from The CARES Act? The CARES Act has once again been amended by Congress and now allows small businesses in San Diego (and nationwide) to now be able to qualify for not only the PPP and the EIDL, but also the ERC - Employee Retention Tax Credit.  It means businesses here in San Diego (and nationwide) can qualify for up to $26,000 per eligible W2 employee through the ERC - Employee Retention Tax Credit, even if they received the PPP and/or the EIDL. It is a tax credit from the IRS, not a grant nor a loan.

The ERC is pretty complicated, and the requirements have changed over time, so you may have heard different things that make you think small businesses can’t benefit from it. I know it can sound too good to be true!

So, to put your mind at ease, I’d like to provide you with some external sources of reference about the ERC:

(the following are hyperlinks - you can grab the full URL by visiting the website but a simple copy and paste works too, just make sure the hyperlink does transfer!)

IRS Website

Journal of Accountancy

Investopedia

U.S. Treasury Department

New legislation allows businesses with 4-499 W2 employees to take advantage of all of them.

Here are the mandatory qualifications to qualify for the ERC (Employee Retention Tax Credit) -- 1 of 4 need to have happened:

ERC qualifications:

  1. 50% reduction in 2020 and 20% reduction for 2021
  2. Revenue shut down or supply chain disruptions
  3. Partial or full shutdown
  4. Must have between 4-499 W2 employees

This is a Covid stimulus package for small businesses. They already got the PPP and/or the EIDL. Now come get the other half.
