San Diego Single Use Plastic Reduction Ordinance Informational Sessions

The City of San Diego's PDF icon Single Use Plastic Reduction Ordinance goes into effect on April 1, 2023. In summary: Most polystyrene foam containers are prohibited from distribution and sale. This includes food service ware such as bowls, plates, trays, cups, lids, and other similar items, as well as egg cartons and meat trays. Single-use plastic (and bio-plastic) straws and utensils may only be provided upon the request of the customer. The following may not be distributed if made from polystyrene foam unless encased within another material: Coolers, ice chests, or similar containers. Pool or beach toys. Dock floats, mooring buoys, or anchor or navigation markers. All polystyrene foam products are prohibited from City facilities (including parks and beaches).

The City is partnering with Cyber Center of Excellence (CCOE) to help small businesses increase their cybersecurity awareness and preparedness to bolster the region’s economic resiliency. The program is FREE to participating small businesses, made possible by a grant from the City of San Diego. The FBI reports a 300% increase in cybercrimes across all industries since the pandemic began with the average cost of a data breach climbing over $4 million! More than half of these costly attacks are aimed at small businesses and supply chains – our region’s economic engine.*

A message from The City of San Diego

The City of San Diego Office of Labor Standards & Enforcement (OLSE) is hosting a virtual training on March 1, 2023 starting at 10:00 am in collaboration with the County of San Diego. The purpose of this initial joint training between the City and County of San Diego is to introduce each agency’s OLSE program, structure, contact information, websites, resources, and laws enforced to businesses operating within the San Diego region. The goal is to educate San Diego employers and businesses of the wage and labor laws enforced by each agency. The outreach will include a guest speaker, Jennifer Shaw from Shaw Law Group, to provide a summary of California labor law updates going into effect in 2023.

Earned Sick Leave and Minimum Wage Ordinance 7 Key Steps to Successful Compliance Effective January 1, 2023, provide a minimum wage of no less than $16.30 per hour to employees working within the geographic boundaries of the City of San Diego. Rate applies to all businesses regardless of business size.   Provide earned sick leave (ESL) through the accrual method (1 hour of ESL for every 30 hours worked) or front-loading method (no less than 40 hours of ESL are awarded at the beginning of the benefit year).   Provide employees with Employer to Employee Notice that includes the Employer’s requirements per the Ordinance.

SAN DIEGO MINIMUM WAGE

OFFICIAL NOTICE SAN DIEGO MINIMUM WAGE $16.30 PER HOUR Rate Effective Date: January 1, 2023 Beginning January 1, 2023, employees who perform at least two (2) hours of work in one work week within the geographic boundaries of the City of San Diego must be paid wages of not less than $16.30 per hour for all hours worked within the City’s geographic boundaries. San Diego’s Earned Sick Leave and Minimum Wage Ordinance, San Diego Municipal Code Chapter 3, Article 9, Division 1, applies to adult AND minor employees who work two (2) or more hours in any workweek within the City’s geographic boundaries. Note: tips do not count towards payment of the minimum wage.
